Dávid Baffi

Many of those who graduated from the painting studio of professor Ivan Csudaia at VSVU between the years 2005-2009 are today considered to be a major force amongst contemporary young painters. Their work's have shaped current trends and have led the way for further artistic happenings.

In his practice David Baffi is constantly dealing with abstraction, exploring its boundaries and working towards a personal definition. The framework for this exploration is material structure, the properties of colour and the tactility of light when applied to the language of painting. Every gesture is a translation based on an analysis of painting. Formally the paintings refer to the modernist tradition of gestural painting ; spontaneous and irrational expressions, (on closer inspection however we see its essential depth).

The colour compositions, shapes and visible traces of a dialogue between the substance and time/space are all carefully considered. One is reminded of the movement in animation . The compositions can be described as a choreography of brush strokes, movement which leads to the strong visual effect of layers and shapes overlapping and intertwining in a field of mostly large format canvases. Every Baffi painting has its routes in a specific visual experience which is modified in the computer or when being transferred onto canvas.

The initial image is analytically fragmented, layers overlap, then are brought together again as new forms. In his work the artist provides hints for the viewer, points which demand our attention. In his own words "the gems". With these gems he lets the viewer recognize the original forms, thus unfolding the work in our own imagination.
